The phone conversation is paraphrased:
"Hello... Grace."
"Hello. Who is this?"
"I'm going to hang up the phone," Jack says.
"Don't. Don't. Just talk to her," I plea.
"Grace... do you remember me?"
"Who are you?"
"It's Jack... you know..."
They are talking, and it seems to be going alright. She remembers him. I wish that she remembered me. THEN: he won't speak to her anymore. He's said something offensive to her. She does not want to speak to him either. I pick up the phone:
"I hope Jack did not reflect badly on me," I say.
"Who are you?"
"Steve. Do you remember me?"
"Yes..."
A feel a slight flicker of hope, BUT
I don't know. I really don't want to get to know her.
"Well, I hope you have a goodnight. I hope we didn't disturb you."
"That's it?"
Was that it? What if I had asked her out? I lived in North Carolina and she lived in Pennsylvania. WHAT IF...
"Goodnight."
"What happened?" Jack asked.
"Nothing."
