Waiting For An Answer

"I'm waiting," said the teacher,
she frowned upon us all
and added that we wouldn't find
the answer on the wall.
We wouldn't "find the answer there,
it's no use looking round"
and so it was that no-one dared
to move or make a sound.
"If necess'ry, I'll wait all day,"
she promised us with glee -
I sat in silent misery,
convinced she'd pick on me.
I can't recall the question
or how the class moved on,
just the overbearing tension
and the fear of being wrong.
I think she loved the power,
I think that she enjoyed
the torment and the terror
in the methods she employed.
Was this how she got her kicks,
by putting us through hell?
Intimidating kids of six,
who had no way to tell?
