Let's Stretch Time
It was burning hot outside the under- ground office of the mining
company where Walter and Carla were at work. The desert outside was
bare of any form of life and the boredom was apparent on both their
faces.
"Time is elastic," said Walter philosophically looking with half closed
eyes at the clock on the wall, the big wad of chewing gum rolling
around in his mouth, "that man Einstein said it, but you don't have to
be a genius to realise that." He chewed, the loud smacking cracking
sounds filled the room. "It is like this, you lie in bed, close your
eyes and before you know it that darned alarm is screaming it's head
off ."
He looked lazily at his companion sitting at the table making a show
of doing her nails.
Carla never looked up from her fingers, "Oh I don't know " she said "I
think that sometimes time just stands still. Take yesterday, I had a
party after work and the time just dragged it's feet. I'm telling you,
it went no where fast!"
Her nails done to her satifaction she stood up to walk to the water
cooler, "Want some?" she asked, Walter did not answer, his thoughts
were still dwelling on the problem of time ."Do you know what I think?"
He Said. "We really should be able to stretch time use it to our
advantage!"
Carla looked at him with a blank face, " What so you mean?" she
asked.
Without bothering to give her an answer Walter got up walked over to
the clock on the wall and began pounding it with his fists. The clock
immediately stopped ticking. He locked the clock securely in the
wall-safe of the office.
"What are you doing?"asked Carla looking at him in supprise.
"So," said Walter with a satified look on his face, "That's fixed
it!"
He began getting his stuff together, "Hi ," said Carla "It's not yet
quitting time!"
"No? " Asked Walter, "How do you know that, I"ve gone and stretched
time. It is now yesterday eight pm!" with a smirk on his face he left
Carla with her mouth hanging open and made for the door.
