The Ghosts of Decency

I grew up in an era of politeness and peace
Perhaps that was false innocence from me
War was supposed to be over
And we were supposed to be free
Vietnam was calamitous and cruel
America was the beast of the cause
I was at school then but I knew
The Yankees were in love with war
Now I’m older my wisdom has regressed
My faith in politicians has slipped away
The great leap forwards is a myth
Backwards is where we must stay
Money and greed is what some people need
And power is the crown of desire
The corrupt and the cruel will fuel
The voices of a graveyard choir
The morals have set sail destined to fail
And we’ve forced humanity into decay
We’ve laughed at the hurt and we’ve shovelled dirt
Where all the ghosts of decency lay

That last verse is brilliant.
That last verse is brilliant. Is this a song? It would be good to music.
