Why was the girl at the railway station crying?

                Maybe just a woman but not yet two decades old.

Why was the girl at the railway station crying?

                Silent tears but bloodshot eyes indicating it has been going on for a while, at least.

Why was the girl at the railway station crying?

                I asked if she was OK, if there was anything I could do to help.

Why was the girl at the railway station crying?

                A break-up?

                Illness or a death?

                A row?

                The state of the country, the plight of the world?

                Something joyful? No, no clearly not happy tears.

Why was the girl at the railway station crying?

‘I’m fine, I’m OK’. She said, turning back to her phone to continue the conservation with her tormentor, her comforter - which, I’ll never know.

Why was the girl at the railway station crying?

              After sitting side-by-side for thirty minutes or so I leave as my train is announced.

Glancing back I see her fingers fly across her phone. Eyes still red, fresh wet tears on her cheeks.

Those brief, tantilising glimpses we get into other people's lives.  And sometimes they produce thoughtful poems like this.  Very much enjoyed it.

I suppose at least she was able to release the tears, not stifling it so that no-one else would know, but her tensions would increase.

My 98 year old mother-in-law keeps dissolving into quiet tears at the moment, and always answers, 'it's nothing' 'it's silly' or 'I'm fine', but I'm finding that as she has never been able to share feelings much, that the tears themselves come rather easily, and, actually, when I persist a bit to try to understand, it is usually something she just is remembering sadly, and there is little one can say, or that seems needed. Much enjoyed, and I think the 'never' knowing adds to the mystery of the piece.

'Why indeed'. I wonder if you will ever see her again.
