I’d fill your shoes better than you do!

“If I were in your shoes,
I’d be more kind to me (this ‘me’)
I would be kind to everyone
not ‘me-absorbed’
as you are now with you, I see.
I would work hard so selflessly
– not for reward or money,
or lazing in long holidays
in climates warm and sunny.
I’d make decisions fairly, squarely,
uninfluenced by jibe or bribe, attack,
unfazed by sneer or flak.
If I were in your shoes I’d be so very, very good
– by my loose standards,
and I would
be very tired,

– maybe it’s better
to stay inside these shoes,
just tell of how much fitter
that I would be if serving in your role,
content they’d never choose me for
what seems, though celebrated,
an unattractive, undesirable, yes,
a really best-avoided goal.”

I like your sense of humour Rhiannon. The idea of walking in someone elses shoes scares the life out of me...though I wouldn't have minded walking in Carole Kings shoes when I was young. wink I think you know what I mean.

Thanks, Jenny. It's so easy to criticize people who are in positions of importance, and maybe rightly so, but it pays to think whether we'd do as well as we expect others to, and how hard working we'd be, how much we might fall into the same temptations to greed etc! Rhiannon

What a thoughtful poem.

but I wonder if some leaders see their shoes as a way of looking taller, and might be better if they wore sensible shoes

Yes! and there again we can ponder whether we'd do the same 'in their shoes' – and be glad to wear shoes that make us look bigger/better than we are instead of doing our  best, hard working and wearing sensible shoes,not pretending anything, and so getting more true respect in the end. Rhiannon
