Beautiful Things

I see beauty in the ocean’s waves,
The shimmer of the stars,
The markings of a butterfly,
An antique painted vase.
In portraits and in peonies,
In every peaceful place,
From long green glass to bright blue skies…
… but never in my face.
I hear beauty in a symphony,
The babbling of a brook.
Logs crackling upon a fire,
Turned pages in a book.
The laughter between dearest friends
When jovial jokes are said.
In poems, songs, all sorts of sound…
… but never in my head.
My looks are plain, my thoughts too dark,
To reign as beauty queen.
Instead, it is my written works
That I strive to have seen.
I try to put it into words,
This beauty that I see.
I feel I find it everywhere…
… but it dwells not in me.

I think few, if any, have
I think few, if any, have confidence in their own physical beauty, maybe because we have an odd view of what to expect! but I think so much is dependant on the mood shining out – the most praised face if the mood is grumpy loses its attractiveness, and an unselfconcsious friendliness can sparkle and be loved by all, whatever physical degree of beauty it may be considered to have!
