The Dance Halls We Once Knew
By Paul McCann
It started with the hop and ended as discos’
Kids on the streets of my town were kept on their toes
We made some friends and saw so many new faces
Meeting each other in many different places .
Locals halls were packed and there was no room to move ,
all the boys stood round in groups with something to prove .
looking for a girl or some looking for a fight ,
it was a hard place in town on a Friday night .
All the hard men would come to tackle one and all
The girls danced and all the boys stood against the wall,
After the dance , the boys would walk the girls back home,
The music was something that we all thought we owned .
Music was life and we were enjoying the ride ,
teenagers together we were on the same side .
Elvis sang In The Ghetto and we understood ,
Middle Of The Road had a few songs that were good .
then Sweet had this song and we all just sang along
Fox On The Run all over the town we came from .
Bridge Over Troubled Water was like paradise .
A Horse With No Name came and sounded really nice
Children Of The revolution arrived one day,
Then Slade sung Look wot you and life was ok.
We heard Colours and Catch The Wind by Donavan .
Then Alone again by Gilbert O'Sullivan.
One day it came to an end when the dances halls closed
But we’ll never forget all those wee discos
We had our time to dance and find romance back then
when we were all once the towns young women and men .

'A long long time ago' but
'A long long time ago' but then it became 'The day the music died'. Good one Paul.
