A Golden Touch

There is a story that is often told
about a king who wished to be rich.
He could turn anything into gold
but it was a gift he’d rather ditch.
The god Dionysus endued him so
to reward him for hosting Silenus.
To that offer he should’ve said no
or ask instead for a kiss from Venus.
His magic touch was problematic;
every object he handled morphed
and the result was quite dramatic.
It was a bestowal he often cursed.
Even his food and drinks became
a solid mass of that precious metal.
It was his fault, he was to blame,
it was up to him to grasp the nettle.
He realised with great consternation
that because of his golden touch
he was heading towards starvation;
it was all becoming too much.
The threat made him sweat and shiver
but was told by Dionysus to immerse
hands and body in the Pactolous river,
so that the curse could finally reverse.
