Waiting for the Light

We have been here before 
I keep trying not to cry
My heart aches to hold you 
And I can’t yet say goodbye
 
So I will just sit here
Keep holding tight to your hand
Relive all the memories
Speak slow so you understand
 
I wish I could tell you
How I’m actually feeling
But it wouldn’t be fair
Truth can be too revealing
 
Take all the time you need
We’ll keep waiting for the light
I’ll stay here beside you
Throughout the day and the night
 
You won’t be alone now
You don’t need to be afraid
And try not to wonder
About the plans that we laid
 
It’s been a strange journey
We went forward and then back
The horses were tiring
And now our reins have gone slack
 
I’ll seize every moment
When you open up your eyes
I’ll tell you I love you
I’ll smile but it’s a disguise
 
Take all the time you need
We’ll keep waiting for the light
I’ll stay here beside you
Throughout the day and the night
 
Don’t worry about me
I’ll be okay on my own
For it won’t be long now
Until I’m sat here alone 
 
Time passes so quickly
And we spent ours together
Like the blink of an eye 
There’s a change to ‘forever’
 
I kiss you on the hand
Study the shape of your face
I’m framing this moment
Trying to lock it in place 
 
Take all the time you need

This is beautiful Jennifer, I could kind of hear this poem as lyrics to a song in my mind as I read, something along the lines of: Carol King's It's Too Late, or James Taylor: You've Got A Friend. I know there's absolutely no connection, but it was just the first thing that came to mind. 

I'm sure your poem will speak to many who have lost loved ones, I know it spoke to me.

Thank you, it could be a song or it could be a poem, I do tend to write poems that are more like song lyrics at times, but unfortunately cannot sing or play an instrument to be able to bring a song to life from my words!

I've just lost my aunt after a long battle with illness, and this is written from the perspective of her husband, my uncle, but I have been in his position, waiting for the light with my father, so it is very personal on more than one level.

You are right, it just hit me! The rhythm IS inspired by a song, and I was listening to it yesterday. Strange how the mind works.

'Creep' by Radiohead, funnily enough, one of my favourites. Completely not the sentiment. Though in a way, it was - she was so f****** special. And so was my dad.

I read this as a loving farewell to a loved one, who is about to die, and the person speaking is reassuring them no matter how much they feel their own heartbreak; it was for me a moving read.
