Song Of The Bogong’s
By Paul McCann
The bush fires arrived around the mountains and valleys like a flame throwing monster from the sky and raged for weeks through some of the forests and bush land during the summer season.
People and wildlife, insects and animals all lost their lives in the fires and bush landscapes turned into a charcoal wilderness . After the fires had been extinguished nature began to reclaim new life . Seeds that had fallen to the ground during the fires germinated and a regeneration started to occur .
Bare tree trees that once had blackened barks now had new foliage and stood proudly again all over the forest floor .
Then there was this one very special tree that had multicoloured leaves that grew there deep in the forest beside a wishing well . This tree whispered words of wisdom to the wind and was the only one of its kind in existence . It had been around since the early mists of time when the sun refused to shine . The Poet Tree had survived the devastating bush fires because of the special magic that the wishing well had been given . At the same moment in time when the bush fires burnt through the forest a songbird and many of the bogong moths flew into the wishing well and took shelter from the flames and they also survived the bush fires .
After the first were extinguished the songbird left the wishing well and perched there on the branches Poetry Tree .
One fine morning as the foggy dew fell down around the forest a ray of sunlight cascaded down from the sky and touched the Songbird and Poet Tree as well as the entrance of the wishing well . Mystically and magically the Poet tree seemed to glow and softly spoke the word
“Hello “
An answer came from the songbird who had found a love song to sing .
Then from deep within the wishing well , the bogong moths emerged .
Just then Poet Tree began to speak and spoke to the creatures in the forest the words began to rhyme then suddenly fruit started to grow on the branches .
Birds of the air and creatures of the forest tasted the fruit and all who tasted the fruit began to recite poetry that was shared further beyond the forest and mountains .
The bogong moths also tasted the fruit and afterwords they started to sing the most beautiful melody that was carried by the four winds to the corners of the earth.
The songbird began to sing along with them humming of the bogong moths and that song echoed all around the forest . At that moment all of the bogong moths left the wishing well and flew away in different directions .
Since that day the songbird has been singing her sweet song that has echoed all through the forest . All the creatures in the forest love to listen , to the Poet Tree with words that rhyme and the bogongs return every season to taste the fruit and they love to sing along with the songbird , other birds of the air and creatures of the forest tasted the fruit and all who tasted the fruit began to recite poetry that was shared further beyond the forest and mountainous places where no one has ever been .
The bogong moths returned to the forest every year to taste the fruit and then sing their beautiful songs with melodies that no one has ever heard.
The End
