Ten years ago today, my husband was murdered. Ten years, ago today I lost my one true love. Ten years ago, I sought to find the person who murdered my husband.
The rain was pouring hard, as I sit by the window, my husband walks in, “Are we still on for the picnic tomorrow afternoon?” I ask softly. “ Yes, honey. The rain should clear up by morning.” He says as he kisses my forehead. “What time will you be home tonight?” “Usual, the meetings were rescheduled till Monday. Jeff is going away today and won’t be in to host it.” God, I hate it when they have the meetings, he never gets home until eight or so. “I’ll have dinner ready. Will you pick up a movie?” I say with a smile. “Yes, I will. I love you, and I will see you tonight.” He says as he is walking out the door.
It’s five o’clock, dinners ready, and I still got 15 minutes to spare. I walk up to the bedroom, figuring I have some time before he gets home. I reach for the slim red dress; this is seductive and sexy, its got to be cute, no I want the sweet and sexy feeling like it was when we met. I tried the black short but rippled dress, Fuck; this one is too innocent. Why can’t I ever find what I want to wear? I try this sundress, not the sundress you catch church girls into. It’s a sundress that’s been altered. The dress is blue, but it wraps around my neck. Slimming down, to the waist, but making my chest pop out. It flares out with multiple layers of ripples, but in a way that’s cute. Yes, this is perfect. I put it on, throw my hair up in a bun, and rush threw just a tad bit of eyeliner, mascara, and lip gloss. I don’t want to feel so overboard, but I want that cute sexy feeling. As I glance at the clock, Shit, he’s going to be home any minute. I cannot believe it took me 20 minutes to get ready.
That’s when I hear a knock at the door. Tension fills my blood, as I walk down the stairs. I peel out the window, to see if I can get a glimpse of who was at the door. No one. Not a soul. Why would someone knock at the door and leave? My hands are shaking, beaming with sweat as I imagine the unthinkable. I slowly open the door as I see a tiny black box, its dusty, and looks like a family crest is etched into it. It has a postcard attached to it with what looks to be a castle with on it. I pick up the box, close the door, and start walking to the living room. I take off the postcard and read the back. “You may have already realized, who he is. If you haven’t well, this will tell you everything. Sweet Dan, thought he could escape his past, his past will forever haunt who he is.” There's no signature, no return label. Who the fuck would have sent this?
The door opens, I stop shove the postcard in my boob and slowly turning around, “Hey Hunny, I'm home.” I breathe, with comfort. “Hi Darling, how was your day?” I say with some relief. “It was good,” he says as he looks down at the box I am holding. “Where did you get there?” His face shows the expression of concerns as he reaches towards it. “Oh it’s nothing, someone just left it on the door, I think they mistakenly sent it to the wrong house. I will deal with it in the morning.” I say, as I pull it back and put it on the counter.

Hello! Welcome to ABC Tales.
Hello! Welcome to ABC Tales. Intriguing start, leaving lots of questions in the reader's mind, encouraging them to move on. You indicated that you would like a critique: I wondered if the first paragraph would have more impact with just the first sentence. I liked the paragraph about the narrator choosing her outfit, because it hints at character and the nature of the relationship, but it goes on too long. The whole piece needs proof reading - there are some issues with punctuation and word repetition, but all of that can be addressed in the second draft. Do keep going with it. I want to know what happens next!
