Dying Inside

Quiet rustling, wind and leaves,
The thousand sounds that make our lives.
A million silent thoughts and deeds
Abound on Earth, with no surprise
At the lack of effect that good lives have
On changing worlds, and saving minds.
The million thoughts continue on
And people walk, dying inside.
Decaying thoughts of moral scenes
And challenges to overcome
Reflected in the ice-cold eyes
Of people on the run.
Running from fear or running to love,
The two roll into one,
Until loving fear and fearing love
The death inside us comes.
Good and evil, kind and cruel,
The lines between the sides are thin,
To kill one thought to save the many
Is still a cardinal sin.
The laws and rules that confine our lives
Designed to snare and pin,
Are broken by the death inside
Which turns and drags us in.
This life and death surround us all,
Ashes are ashes, dust is dust,
The rites of passing, the rites of birth,
Death is the ending, and life is just
The gateway to the pathway to
The final terminus.
The death inside us pulls us through
And what lies beyond is us.
