On Songs

I write poems and songs. Poems can be about anything or anyone. They
dont have to rhyme all the time. Songs tend to be less complex and are
usually easier to remember when playing. The standard structure
involves a verse and chorus and you can repeat lines just to emphasise
what you are trying to say in the song.
Some songs can be like poetry. Take "Tonight At Noon" from the second
Jam album for example. I have put some of my poems to chords and sung
them.
Songs have themes: teenage alienation of frustration, love, friends,
being someone, having self respect, battling against adversity, work,
and the world outside. A good song can be all conquering and everyone
will remember it whereas others are instantly forgettable.
Some songs can have very simple lyrics yet the tune or melody that goes
with those words may be a dance tune or something altogether
different.
Next time you hear a song you like on the radio or on your CD player
listen to the words if you can. Do the words work? Or are they just
filling for the tune?
