The Importance of Being Thirty

At thirty I had an epiphany;
I was twenty no more.
The give-away?
A novelty card from my wife.
Over breakfast I wrestled with morsels,
both existential and cereal.
Who am I? What have I done?
Heavy topics for a light breakfast.
To ponder in solitude I retired to to the 'John';
SPLASH! You-reeker!
A man should be judged by his actions alone.
My father's words shortly before a fatal bacon-eating contest.
Evaluating a life from a floral couch;
his words reverberate like a kettle drum.
Time for work had come and gone,
but little progress made.
Listing achievements and deeds;
I was born, that much I'm sure of...
Nothing I listed felt like just mine,
I needed something to justify my existence.
Just then, in came my wife;
sympathetic smile soothing my ills.
You are you whatever you do.
Happy Birthday.
