In the kitchen again

I would start cooking again for you
Re-label the spices, re-read the books
Use every single pan
From every single hook
I’d start setting alarms again
See mornings, make plans
Play all the old records again
Ask questions, hold hands
I would bring you yellow eggs
Send you a poem each day
Learn how you make the bed
In that special way
I would pick up all the little bits
Left by divorce and disaster
Mend the holes that were shot
Through your happy ever after
I’d unwrap the sticky bandage
Peel off all the plasters
Massage the muscle gently
‘Til it beat hard finally - and faster.
