The next morning she set off for Esme’s shop feeling rather happier. During the night she’d thought of a possible solution to Gordon’s problem and needed to see the landlord of the George and Dragons for his approval.
She’d also decided that provided she kept away from the dam, she couldn’t get into any trouble, so she was quite happy as she learned the ingredients for the days’ spell. She waited until lunchtime, then asked Esme if she could fly to the village for a quick chat with the landlord at the pub.
“A quick chat is it?” asked Esme, “more like a crafty ginger beer if you ask me! Off you go then, but don’t miss this afternoons’ lesson, you’re going to make a batch of headache cure all by yourself.”
Jennifer Jane promised to be quick. It only took a couple of minutes to fly to the pub and she knew she’d be able to get back in plenty of time.
“I’ve had an idea to keep Gordon happy,” she said when she arrived, “if you all agree to let him have one riddle a day, whether you cross the bridge or not, then I’m sure he’ll be able to keep his business going and he won’t start any trouble.”
The landlord and the customers were all pleased to accept this solution. They hadn’t even realised that Gordon was getting hungry and certainly didn’t want to cause him any problems.
Most of them could still remember the trouble they used to have with Lurgin, so they didn’t want to upset any more trolls. One riddle a day was less than they usually used, so it seemed that everybody would be happy.
Jennifer Jane took a week's worth of riddles with her, just to say sorry from the villagers for any worries they may have caused and gave them to Gordon. He was delighted, so she flew back to the shop in good time for her afternoon’s work, feeling very pleased with herself.
Esmerelda was satisfied with the results of her potion making that afternoon, so she continued happily with her lessons and soon forgot about the dam.
Every now and again, she or Ermintrude would fly across to the village with wart cures or any other potions, which had been ordered that week. She always had a look at the river but there were no obvious changes.
Gordon was happy, the villagers she spoke to were happy and she was happy in her new work. Esme and Dulce were pleased with her, so all in all, life was very pleasant. Of course she still had to go to school in her own world, but there were no worries about that and she looked forward to her trips to the alternate world in her free time.
As she realised afterwards, it all seemed too good to be true!
