Blue Wisteria (Part One)

Dr. Woodstock looked out of the window of his office. It was then he saw her; such a graceful flight of fancy in a light blue summer frock, moving on the tarmac. She seemed to be coming to the hospital. He wondered if it was to see him. He checked his calendar; no, no one of that sex and age was on his appointments list. He approximated her age as about thirty: a beautiful flower in full bloom. He was smitten. He'd been known to like the ladies for a long time and a lot of the nurses were keen on him. With his black hair and his dashing, good looks women were putty in his hands.
He had half an hour before his first patient. Maybe I could look in the waiting room, see if I could meet her. Really he was incorrigible, but Cupid's dart had been firmly planted in his heart, just from that first sighting.
The waiting room was for several departments: ear, nose and throat, gynaecology, cardiac etcetera. He was cardiac: at least this beautiful woman didn't have heart problems.
There were a few empty seats at the back of the room. Surely, he thought, she will sit here. When she finally arrived Melissa Hutton made for the area he thought she would and conveniently sat next to him. I won't probe her on her ailment, he thought, it would be impolite, but I'll certainly engage her in conversation.
Melissa noticed him immediately; he was such a strong presence in the room. She got all tingly when he addressed her.
"Hi, I'm a doctor here, whatever's the matter I'm sure we will be able to help you. It's a very good hospital with many fine doctors."
"Oh, I know it is, I've been before."
"Oh, I've never seen you."
"Maybe not, I usually come in the evenings after work, but today I've started my holidays; I've got a month off."
"Now that's funny," he said, "I start my holidays tomorrow, just a fortnight though."
"Are you going anywhere nice?"
"Well, the second week I'm going to Venice, just for a week."
"Oh, that's somewhere I'd love to go, but I've never been before."
"Oh, I went last year on my own and I'm going again on my own this year."
Melissa couldn't believe such a handsome man would be on his own. She felt a magnetic pull towards him that was full of promise, a promise of rainbows and deep, blue seas, shining diamonds in the night.
"Look," he suddenly said to Melissa, "I saw you from my window and just had to meet you. I hope you don't think I'm awful."
"Not at all," she said, now flustered and a trifle embarrassed.
"I've got to get back to my office now, but maybe we could meet again."
"Oh, I'd love to," she said full of enthusiasm.
"Do you have a phone number? he asked.
Melissa scribbled down her phone number quickly on a piece of paper and handed it to him.
It was such a strong, handsome hand with moulded digits and beautiful half moons on every fingernail.
"Oh, I must have your name," he said.
"I'm Melissa."
"I'm Dr. Woodstock, Ken. I'll ring you tonight."
With that the first chapter in what seemed to be a very tantalizing romance was over.
