Democrats and Republicans are engaged in a blood bath for the ages. The contest is to determine not which side is more popular but rather which side is less unpopular
A Thrilla in Vanilla
Let's face it, we are still captivated by a fierce slugfest as exemplified by Ali and Frazier in their Thrilla in Manilla.
Exchanges are what differentiates a thrilla from a boxing match.
A slugger looks to exchange...a boxer looks to avoid exchanges #MoneyMayweather.
An exchange happens when a left hook is exchanged for a right cross or vice versa. At the moment of exchange, a decision is made. If Frazier throws his left hook, he is aware that Ali will counter with a right cross. Frazier is betting that his left hook will do more damage to Ali than Ali's right cross will damage him. Ali is thinking the same thing only opposite. They decide to exchange. Both men suffer...one perhaps more than the other. The crowd roars.
Ali was always a better "boxer" than Frazier. Frazier the better "slugger". Ali better at defense, Joe better at offense. For most of his career, Ali chose to avoid exchanges. He was a butterfly with the sting of a bee. He jabbed, jabbed, jabbed and retreated from exchanges until he had worn his man down. He piled up a lot of points and exhausted and frustrated his opponents. He even rope a doped a few...standing against the ropes and letting the other fighter pound away until he was spent and then the bee sting that ended the fight.
By the time Ali and Frazier had reached the thriller in Manilla...both had lost the aura of invincibility. Ali had been smoked by Frazier when Muhammad decided to hook with a hooker. George Foreman had annihilated Frazier when Smokin" Joe decided to bomb with a bomber.
Down goes Frazier
When they reached Manilla, both men had decided that this was no longer a boxing match....it was a Death March. Both men actively decided to exchange from the opening bell. When Ali rose from his stool for the final round, he was near death. Frazier's corner, meanwhile decided that if Joe got up from his stool, he would be blinded. Joe's corner threw in the towel. The fight ended.
Neither man ever recovered although Ali was proclaimed the winner.
This is the exact strategy that is being employed in America now as Republicans and Democrats...Conservatives and Progressives are willing to hurt themselves in the eyes of the voting public if they are hurting their opponents more.
The country and the world is fascinated by this death march which every day does more and more damage to our country and the world as it splits us wide open while concussing our intellects, blinding our eyes and muddying our morals.
The thing got so bad that we had to stop the fight for awhile...close down the government for few days because the carnage, although fascinating, had become too toxic to enjoy.
Too much blood...too much pounding...too many low blows...too much screaming...too much back and forth....too many exchanges...too much partisan analysis
All of this is building up to the annual State of the Union address which promises to be one of the most savage political events and widely viewed spectacles of the century.
Apparently, Jimmy Kimmell,in a battle of his own is going to follow up the State of the Union with a teevee storm of controversy. Kimmell is scheduled to have Smirking Stormy Daniels on his show in the most divisive ratings grab since the blue dress days of Wa Wa and Monica.
Everybody loses once again.
Just like in Manilla.
Only this time it's not just a prizefight.
This time it's for all the marbles.
