Someone I Used to Know

Will we remember, when we're gone
The times we've had
The things we've done
Will we find the time to speak
As we fill
Each passing week
As we start our new careers
With each new week
With each new year
Will we start to drift away
Become a piece
Of yesterday
Will I just be a Christmas card
(I meant to write
but work's been hard)
Will I wonder, now and then
Where you are
How you've been
Will you be someone I once knew
Because of things
I used to do?
This poem was written very late at night towards the end of my time at
University when it suddenly struck me that all the people I'd spent 24
hours a day with for the last few years might suddenly not be there
anymore. I realised how easy it is to let things slide, you have new
friends, new house, new job - a week becomes a month becomes a year and
suddenly you've lost contact with people whom you had very special
relationships with. It's up to all of us to work at our friendships and
for us to be the one to call not wait for the other person.
It was written to make sure I did keep in touch and to a certain
extent has worked with my two housemates still being close friends. I
did lose contact with one of them for several years but then just by
writing a letter we manged to pick up our friendship where it had left
off and both get a great deal from the relationship
