Work Diary, 9/24/02
The human resources manager in my office has a son with cancer of the
colon. He's only twenty-one. They've removed most of the mess, and now
he must wear a colostomy bag for the rest of his life.
The woman up the street from us had an affair with some stranger who
often rides through the neighborhood on a crappy bike. She kissed him
passionately on the stoop one day. Later, her husband pushed her down
on the sidewalk in front of their house, which is now up for
sale.
We recently received a claim in which the insured ran off the road on a
Monday. Her car ended up behind some tall grass. They found her on a
Friday.
My aunt's boss's wife just lost her baby two days after her first
trimester was up. The doctors told her everything was fine, then she
called her husband and said she couldn't feel the baby.
My friend works at a low-income elementary school, where most of the
kids are on the free lunch program. They keep a supply of winter coats
on hand for those kids who show up in short sleeves during the
winter.
Last week, at an Old Navy store in Boulder, a man walked in and stabbed
one of the teenage employees to death. "You're father will know why
this happened to you," he said, then went outside and waited for the
police.
Meanwhile, Leona Helmsley is voted one of the best-dressed
billionaires.
All possible story lines, but will they sell?
