SOLE RESIDENT POET
at four o'clock in the morning
I am the sole denizen of this planet.
With neighbors whisked away in the night and
traffic blocked at planet borders
pure tranquility is to be heard and felt.
sounds of crickets and heat in summer and
snowfall accompanied by chill in winter
keep me company as feelings of anger and distress,
wonder and joy, confusion and loss
tumble from my mind in supple words
to stretch into enduring expressive verse.
when my mind is fresh yet still carries
a lingering veil of half-remembered dreams and
morning has not yet broken into birdsong,
is when I am the sole resident poet.
