As he opened the letter
he knew right away
that she’d flown the nest.

‘Dear John’, the missive said,
‘I am leaving you.
I think it is for the best.

At first he was distraught
by the sad news
but then he thought

there had been an error
for his name wasn’t John,
it was Trevor.

I suppose for people called John every letter is a Dear John letter, which must be quite disheartening.

As the world moves on, it's all done by text message these days. Is there really such a thing as a Dear John text, and in the name of gender equality do we also have Dear Jane letters?

Hi Turlough. Many people named John use the nickname Jack, possibly for that reason.

Yes. Nowadays, the mobile phone would replace the letter. Texts have even been used for job dismissals.

A Jane might simply leave him at the altar. He would soon get the message. laugh
