On My Soap Box (Poetry Monthly)

I am standing on my soap box
at Speakers' Corner in Hyde Park
to lambast the uncaring politicians
who ignore
the real victims of the class war.
They say we should be full of guilt
and want to tax us to the hilt
for being, would you Adam and Eve it,
merchant bankers.
What wankers!
Some of them were born
with a silver spoon in their mouth
and have never done a day’s work
yet champion the cause, so they claim,
of the working people.
Their demands are so unfair;
they are ignorant of the onus
that is placed on us
before we can get a wee bonus
which barely covers the rent
of a pied-à-terre in Mayfair
and a buffet of lobster and champagne.
Also with our salary, which is meagre
compared to footballers’ pay,
we have no choice but to buy a Ferrari,
or a Rolls Royce,
because the Capital is devoid
of strike-free reliable transport.
The threat they make is sinister;
I no longer shall suffer this torment
and will stand at the next election
for a cushy seat in Westminster.

Oh, that is so clever, and I can see it would go well as performance (I still am not sure what should be regarded, and what not regarded, as performance poetry), as the 'audience' would gradually wake up to who you are, and what your complaint is! Rhiannon

Congrats on POD, Luigi. I get the impression some think it a rant against all politicians and everyone rich, but I thought it more subtle than that! Rhiannon

those wankers drive me
those wankers drive me bonkers, what can I say? I'm thinking and writing and Parliament has had its day. Fuck them that fuck us. I hate them with so much a passion that old-fashoned politics has went out of fashion. It's class war. Of that I've no doubt. Emotions run high. Jailed if you let them out.
