Bo Bo And Charlie On Bob A Job Week
By Paul McCann
Bo Bo was asked by Mr Cushy the scout master if they could use part of the boxing club on Thursday night’s until the building of the new scout hall was completed .
Being the kind of person that he is Bo Bo said it was ok as the lads from Bosco’s could do some cross country runs on that night . Every now and then the boxing club was often used for other community events and Bo Bo loved that about the place .
So it was agreed that every Thursday evening until further notice My Cushy and the scouts and cubs would be able to meet there for their activities ,. Among the activities there were games to play , skills to learn like tying various rope knots , marching and drill practice and of course Mr Cushys favourite things like storytelling , and putting on plays for the parents . Then there were weekly and annual fundraising things such a bob a job week , football pools and guessing competitions .
Every Thursday in Bosco’s boxing club a small crowd of lads waited for the door to be opened . It was Bob a job week for the cubs and Bo Bo had an idea that he and Charlie would try to add their support to the case . He asked Mr Cushy if he and Charlie could do some odd jobs around the community and whatever money they got they would donate it to the movement . Mr Cushy was more than happy for Bo Bo and Charlie to assist and even provided some scout uniforms for them .
It was a beautiful April morning when Bo Bo and Charlie went out looking for a few jobs to do and began door knocking to see if anyone needed any jobs done . Most people in the local community knew Bo Bo so they were always welcome in their approach .
Charlie knocked on Mrs McAfee’s door and asked her if she wanted to give him something to to do for Bob a job week , She responded by asking him to run up to the end of the street and back again for a shilling ,
After Charlie did what she had asked she handed over the money and signed his job card and made a comment , excellent work provided .
Charlie run all the way to tell Bo Bo all about his successful job . Bo Bo was talking to Mr Killen across the street . When Charlie got there he was out of breath and gasping between words.
“Bo Bo , I did a job ,
Stopping to catch his breath as Bo Bo said ,
“’well done Charlie /”
Charlie continued ,
“Well it wasn’t really a job , it was more of a jog Bo Bo “
Still out of breath Bo Bo said ,
“Charlie , lets not get too carried aways . We’re just started so relax for a few minutes “
“Can I get you a glass of water Charlie ?”
Mr Killen asked .
“I’d love some water as I’ve just run a marathon for a shilling Mr Killen :
As Mr Killen went ot6 get Charlie a drink of water he explained what Mrs McAfee asked him to do for a shilling . Bo Bo smiled and said ,
:I hope all our jobs are as easy as that Charlie “
Mr Killen returned and gave a bottle of water to both of the lads , Bo Bo asked if he could wash Mr Killens windows of the house for bob a job week and he replied ,.
‘I don’t see why not Bo Bo . If Charlie was willing to run a marathon for a shilling , washing my windows is a piece of cake for the same price .
Bo Bo told Charlie to keep door knocking while he went to get his window cleaning ladder . Charlie responded ,.
“See me Bo Bo , I’m your friendly bob a job man “
Bo Bo replied :
“Great work Charlie See you soon Charlie “
Charlie went over to Mr Donaghy’s house and knocked on the window pane .
As Mr Donaghy opened the door Charlie gave a big smile and said ,
“Can I wash your car for a shilling Mr Donaghy . Its bob a job week “
Mr Donaghy smiled and replied .
“A shilling’s cheap Charlie and I’d love to give you the job but I don’t have a car and to be honest I’ve never had a car . “
However he handed Charlie a shilling for being willing to wash his car if he had one to wash an d made a comment on Charlie’s job card which read , Great work .
Mr McAteer was just about to go out of the house with his two dogs , Immediately ly Charlie raced over and asked ,
“ Can I walk your two cocker spaniels for a shilling . It’s bob a job week Mr Mc Ateer “
Mr McAteer said ,
“I’m taking the dogs over to the kennels Charlie . I’m going on a two week holiday and they will be taking care of them while I’m away but here’s some money for bob a job week anyway “
He handed Charlie two shillings and Charlie said ,.
“Its only one shilling you know Mr McAteer “
who replied ,
“Aye sure I know . but there’s so lets just pretend you walked both the dogs “
He also signed the job card with the comment . Two jobs were done to my satisfaction .
When Bo Bo came walking along the street carrying his ladder to clean Mr Killens windows , Mrs Doherty called over to Bo Bo ,
“Bo Bo could you add me to your list . My windows need a good clean ?”
Bo Bo gave her the thumbs up and replied .
‘I’ll be over in ten minutes Mrs Doherty “
Charlie knocked on the door of Mr and Mrs Malone’s house and asked if they needed anything done for bob a job week and they replied ,.
“Maybe you could cut the grass in the front garden Charlie and the hedge .Its a shilling isn’t it Charlie “
“Sure enough Mr Malone , it’s for bob a job week “
Mr Malone handed Charlie a pair of hedge shears and Charlie started the job ..
It seemed like no time at all had passed before Mrs Malone called Charlie inside the front parlour of the house where she had made him something to eat . On the table was a boiled egg, some toast and a cup of tea .Also sitting there on the table was the money for cutting the grass and trimming the hedge . She wrote a note on his job card that said . A job well done .
Opposite her house Bo Bo washing Mrs Dohertys windows and Charlie went over with his pockets going jingle jangle when he walked . After Bo Bo finished Mrs Doherty’s house they both walked up to the top of the village to the big fancy houses on Bright Avenue where some of the wealthy folk lived .
Standing at the front door of one of the houses . a woman called over even before they had the chance to knock on her door ,.
“Hello there . Do you clean windows ?”
“Yes we do , It’s for bob a job week ?’
They said and she replied ,
“Well come back next year and give them a wash for me “
Then she went on and closed over the door . The next person they asked made up for her being so rude and when Bo Bo asked if he had any jobs that needed done for bob a job week he replied ,
“Well maybe you could give that doormat of mine a good shake “
Bo Bo and Charlie were happy with the days takings and decided to call it a day ,
The week ahead brought more good fortune with little effort required . Most of the people in the village knew it was bob a job week and were very supportive in their giving to the scouts .
All some people asked for was a joke to make her laugh. Or for them to read them a page from a book . They were all glad to hand over a shilling and sign their job cards because of their good nature and their kindness .
The End
