Drifting Away To Another Time And Place
by Paul McCann
When I saw her walking down the street ,
I looked at her and said
What about you , how are you feeling
and she nodded her head
She stopped and looked
and without a word said
I knew in my heart
that there was nothing on earth
that would ever break us apart .
Then the sun shone down round this place
and I was drifting away,
to another time and place where
we spoke in different way
with the gift of love that we share
in this place where we come from
and the sun shone around us ,
when our darkest hour had gone .
I was drifting away, so far away
to another time ,
in another place ,
on another day
to when she was mine .
The way we walk and talk
is a just like whisper everyday ‘
We always say what we mean
and we always mean what we say
Thats how it was ,
that’s how it is
and that’s how we found our way .
To the place we were
In another time on another day
and I was drifting away to when everything was ok .
and the sun shone down on this place,
long ago and far away .
Somehow she had come back to me
in a different way today and I looked at her ,
there was so much that I wanted to say .
She just nodded her head
and then she silently walked away .

Are teenage dreams so hard to beat?
Your opening lines reminded me of the song Teenage Kicks by the Undertones.
These words of yours really have taken me back to another time on another day.
Emotions... love, nostalgia and sadness... a wonderful combination in poem.
And you've got me singing now.

Ulsterness
Brilliant!
I'm very pleased to hear that Paul. I love the commenting side of ABC Tales. Getting to know the writers a bit gives me a better understanding of what the writers are writing about. Without today's earlier comments I may not have recognised the Ulsterness in your poem but now it's very clear, though maybe more Derry than Belfast. That doesn't take anything away from the poem though. It's still very good even without the background knowledge.
And I was already singing 'I'll tell me ma' before Feargal's head popped up.

A sad reflective poem, that
A sad reflective poem, that unfolds beautifully, I found it brought echo's of early unfulfilled love and yes - Teenage Kicks, maybe the best song ever about that love - Thanks Paul.
