Looking Back Through The Years
By Paul McCann
So I was just a few months old trying to creep
and finding it difficult just to get asleep
I’m not yet one and found some words are hard to say
Its also hard for me to put my toys away.
It's funny when I was one and not yet grown up ,
No more on the bottle now sipping from a cup.
Then at two and everybody’s looking at you
but you’ve no idea what life’s all about ,
Do you ?
So I’m three, walking tall and things are looking good.
At four I’m ready to say goodbye to childhood.
Now I’m five and going to school with all the rest.
Trying to be brave and to do my very best .
So at six , I’m kicking and taking things in stride
Now seven I’m in the park on a swing and slide
A big boy , I’m eight and wearing long trousers too
Then at nine its time to leave the child’s life I knew .
When I was ten it seemed life went by me so fast .
in double digits life was slowing down at last .
As a teenager I’m in a different land .
trying to say things that no one can understand..
An adolescents world is one I thought I owned
Buying cars and furniture with a personal loan.
In my teenage years I disappeared and went numb .
Hi-jacked by aliens , till I was twenty one .
Then I learnt to sleep standing up without a bed .
I sat down to eat because I had to be fed .
I forgot to say grace and ate the birthday cake .
and I wished people out there would give me a break .
I was now twenty two an adult was I .
It was time to travel, the world was passing by.
I lost count of the years and decades came and went ,
After I was married I became a parent .
I started watching my children grow year by year .
Then all of a sudden they too had disappeared .
Hi-jacked by aliens and hoping they’ll return .
Strange thing as you get older money seems to burn .
Retirement came but I kept working for a while .
Now at times I look back at life and have to smile .
When I was young I had so much fun that was good.
I’m old now but returning back to my childhood.

Very true, taking those
Very true, taking those memories and putting them into words. You're right about returning to childhood in later years. It's in retirement that you have the time to enjoy hobbies without having to worry about working...well it is for me!
