Shadows On The Shannon
By Paul Mc Cann
Come all you fishermen
with some time to spend
on the rivers blanket
where a banquet awaits
among the pebble stones
and the shadows roam
in shallows of the Shannon .
Come to the Shannon then
and find the salmon’s den
from Cavan to Clare
in the sunlight there
where ripples run
all the way
along the edges of the Shannon .
’They talk about the fairy folk
who never seem to get old
and all the stories they told
were in a different brogue
from Tir Na Oge and they all lived
under the Shannon .
Come cast a line or two
and have a listen to
the wild geese fly
and feast your eye
on the wild flowers
for hours and hours
in the gentle ways
of the Shannon
.
They talk about the fairy folk
who never seem to get old
and all the stories they told
were in a different brogue
from Tir Na Oge
and they all lived
under the Shannon .
