Street Football
By Paul McCann’
Without the word of a lie, I’ll tell ye there was something there.
it was just magic , the way we played our street football with flair .
We left schoolbags on the ground as invisible goalposts there
and then we picked our players calling out their name in the air.
We had the best players in the world, away beyond compare
Best , Pele , Banks , Derek Doogan and Jimmy Johnston was there .
If there was an under 7 world cup we would have won it
We could body swerve and curve the ball and do a scissor kick.
Even though there were no nets to wreck we did it anyway .
We played on the streets and spare grounds until the end of the day.
We never missed coaching , we never went poaching we just played .
Around the front doors of the houses in the streets where we stayed
We scored with our heads and toes on both feet if we had a chance
.We could dance with the ball with a passion , it was a romance
We could dribble with the ball tied by a string close to our feet
then with no traffic , nothing could stop it , football on the street.
We run rings around them and skipped over sliding tackles too .
There were no short cuts or Cul De Sacs , in the streets that we knew .
