Summer In Australia
By Paul McCann
When summer comes to this land
bodies lay on the golden sand.
There’s surfing , fishing and fun
for everyone under the sun
When its summer down under
it’s almost like an eighth wonder .
There’s so much that’s going on
Tennis , cricket, bowls on the lawn ,
In the paddocks with barbwires
Horses panicking in bushfires
and there’s black smoke in the sky
where the wild birds no longer fly
and in dried out water holes
farmers are leaving for new roles
in the city for some work
instead of digging in the dirt
for a little bit of cash
and then its all gone in a flash
like a harvest in the flame
in the bush without any rain .
Mother Nature is her name
Unpredictable is her game .
There’s the quiet outback pub
In Australia there’s the pub
With no shower just a steel tub
as the dust storms come and go
but when well nobody would know
Mother nature has her ways
as she would block out the suns rays .
Meanwhile on the city street ,
In places where some people meet
There are lots of back packers
eating nuts and munching crackers
in beer gardens where they share
stories of travelling everywhere
with the tropical cyclones
captured live on their mobile phones
and sent to friends overseas
with photos of some wallabies
form the outback here in Oz
and its so different here because .
we have our didgeridoos
blow flies and summer barbecues
in the summer , we can choose
to have a Sydney harbour cruise
or play all day in the sun
or share cool drinks with everyone
or just listen all day long
to the cicadas and their song .
Flanked by the sun ,surf and sand .
It’s the diversity of this land
and the beauty of this place
with so much sanctuary and space
and different cultures and views
from the inner tracks to the avenues .
Summer in Australia lasts for a while ‘
and things change so fast ,
In the ashes on the sand
We all leave footprints on the land
as we look at blue sky ,
and capture something in our eye
that we will never forget
of the summer and all the sweat
.
