Confusion
By Naomi Abdull
- 522 reads
You creep up on me like a hunter does its prey,
Like a misty dense grey fog, you surround me
There isn’t a void that you do not fill,
Your presence casts a shadow on all that is before me
You are both above and below,
To the left and right of me
And like a caged wild animal, I want to escape you
You sound like a million voices chattering in my ears,
With different tongues and at different speeds and volumes.
I am unable to distinguish between these voices and do not know which one to pay attention to,
In fact my head aches in doing so.
You are neither hot nor cold,
Sweet nor sour,
Hard nor smooth,
Sharp nor blunt.
Your smell is odourless yet strong
You are a dictionary of information and at the same time a blank page
Like a jilted lover trying to mend a broken heart I try to look beyond you,
When I squint I believe I can see something in the distance,
But like a mother keeps a child from danger, you keep the answers I need from me.
You are like a broken compass, preventing me from knowing the true north
Like a magician you trick and fool me,
Providing a thin line between truth and illusion.
Your exit is as swift as your arrival,
Just as in magic, in a puff of smoke you are gone.
The fog has lifted,
Silence has returned,
And all I need is within my grasp, where it will remain.

I like the development of
I like the development of 'fog' and 'smoke' throughout and that is an aspect of the poem that is really effective. Well done.
