ABANDONMENT
When I climbed inside that old car
It went dark
Which was a surprise
As it was so bright outside
With that heavy fall of squeaky snow
The key slid easily into the steering column
Two turns and little coloured squares lit up
All around the dashboard
Like discovering a computer
On the moon
And the vents coughed ash and bugs
Into the cabin
The wipers were valiant in their effort
To shovel eight inches of frozen water
But only managed to make noise
No visible visibility
The engine turned once and boomed
A low bumbling rumble
Beautifully muffled by the snow blanket
More like a beast than machine
Thawed dimples appeared on the old maroon bonnet
Either side above the hottest parts
An human arm removed all the snow from the glass
With one simple sweep
It landed on the ground with a fluffing sound
And inside it was light and old again
Someone said "shit" when they saw that mice
Had eaten the gearstick bag, exposing steel skeleton
"Still life in her yet" an old man offered.
