Today is an ok day

Sometimes, you have to come clean and say, "You know, it’s not so bad to be alive". It could be worse – d’ya know what I mean? It’s like there are worse places to be.
I know what you’re gonna say. It all depends. It depends on your circumstances – and it does. But, hey, ya know? When you get up in the morning and you feel like this, who the hell is there to argue?
I know a lady who’s cooling her heels out in Africa. She hates the idea of coming back to the hustle and the bustle and the headlong rush to nowhere. Well, I’ve kinda thought about this myself, and I ain’t no great fan of spending all my time in some goddam office dealing with crap. But ya know? I don’t need to worry about malaria or having no water or dying of appendicitis. Know what I mean?
Nothing’s perfect. I know that. In Africa your life’s cut short by disease. Here it’s cut short by work. So there you go. But not everyone gets hit, just some of us. Well, baby, that’s life.
So bad things happen. Yeah, yeah. Happens to me. Happens to you. Did you read the small-print? It says “Shit happens”. “Shit happens”. Too fucking right. And it happens to all of us. Sometimes the breaks ain’t so good. It’s a fact. Some folks don’t get any of the breaks. That’s a fact, too. See what you’ve done here – you’re bringing in the clouds. But today’s a beautiful day. Don’t ask me why. I just know it is.
So tomorrow I go back to the job. Monday Blues. But someone somewhere is a whole lot worse off, hear what I’m saying? Someone is gonna wish they was getting right on up at six a.m. and stumbling around the apartment, hitting their toe on the door and heading out in the dark and the wind and the rain to catch a train. It’s how it is.
Life’s ok. For once, I’m gonna forget all the crap. Forget how good things might be and be glad of what I got, because – know what? Tomorrow I could be in a box. Today? – well today is an ok day.
