"Spinach and trains," said Larry.
"What?," said Mick.
"I remember it," said Larry. "From my childhood. The smell."
Mick had known Larry all of his life, but he remembered nothing of spinach - or, for that matter, trains. In the manner known as 'humouring someone,' he said, "Okay."
"What do you remember?," said Larry.
"Not much," said Mick.
"Come on, Mick," said Larry. "Attune with your senses."
"But I don't know h-"
"Close your eyes... and connect with your nasal passages..."
With a barely discernible shrug, Mick did as he was bid...
And he was there!
The batteries from his childhood electronic toys (Scalextric, Tron, Space Invaders and such)... the midnight chilli con carne cooked by his Nana on New Year's Eve... the scent of burning sausages on the multiple failed barbecues... and so on.
"Ooh..." said Mick.
"Do you see?," said Larry. "Or rather, smell?"
"Well I..."
"Tell me of the scent memories which you and I share, which derive from the shared experiences of our mutually joyful childhoods."
"Um..."
"Tell me, friend Mick!"
Mick opened his eyes.
Larry looked at him expectantly.
Mick opened his mouth to speak.
Larry raised his eyebrows.
"Spinach and trains," said Mick.
"That's the fella," said Larry - who then, with a nostalgic smile hovering around his lips, went to put the kettle on.
