A Lady and A River
P K Routray
In all languages,
over the ages,
in all countries,
crossing all boundaries,
Poets see a simile
between a river and a lady.
As per linguist’s formula on gender,
this poetic simile makes us to wonder.
As to the similarities between them,
let us ponder a while to find and name.
The river at times changes her calmness to furry,
The ladies have similar moods as seen from their history.
The autumn sound of a river matches ladies’ melody,
in flood like an angry lady it also becomes rowdy.
with beautiful scenes and sight along the course of a river,
it can be compared with a lady under ornaments’ cover.
The light on its bank and in the water of a river,
under darkness dazzles like a necklace, giving thoughts to the poets to ponder.
Rivers clean dirt like a mother,
nurtures one and plays with him like a sister.
like mother’s milk, the river feeds water with love,
Rivers are generally worshipped as mother across the globe.
The waves in the water can be compared with ladies’ curly hair.
from start to finish the beauty on the curls raises poetic flair.
A river flows through a zigzag path stretching from mountain to ocean,
A lady meets her beloved through thick and thin and despite many a caution.
The hairs of a lady become grey and thin when the summer of the life comes,
In summer with balding patch of sand beds, in a river thin the water stream becomes.
The sun and the moon reflect in water,
but the ripples in water breaks the sun and moon to hither and thither,
similarly the emotional ripples and waves of thoughts,
break the love in the heart of a lady to many many dots.
Any onlooker at the river gets his own image reflected,
any love to a fair sex may get at least to some extent reciprocated.
A lady has got the enduring capacity of a river,
all the wrath of males are endured with love by a female may she be a wife, a sister or a mother.
