In Scotland, bus passes are available to everyone over sixty. This summer I thought I’d take mine out on some adventures, like the ‘Famous Five’. ‘Bus Pass Has Plenty of Fun’ sort of thing.
In the last few years, electric double-deckers were added to the bus fleet. The scenery is spectacular viewed from the top deck, especially the coastal route west. Thought I’d start small, adventure-wise, don’t want Bus Pass over-excited. After chores this morning, I decided a nice view from the top deck on a trip to Cullen would be adventure enough. Bus pass remained undaunted when an old single-decker bone-shaker chugged up instead.
Bus Pass has three issues with public transport: The public. The waiting. Being spontaneous. Is the act of spontaneity worth having to wait another hour, or part-thereof, for the next bus?
Worst aspect of issue one is those with mobile phones, no ear buds and the delusion that the world is their living room. Solution: Wireless headphones and a subscription to Audible give poor Bus Pass peace from the discord of issue one.
Cullen is a beautiful holiday town, famous for spectacular views of the viaduct and for a fish soup called Cullen Skink. (Don’t tell them, but the best Cullen Skink on the Moray coast is from ‘The Bothy’ in Burghead). Cullen is the best place for ice cream however, and for thrifting in the antique shops. Bus Pass favourites. Bought two small candle sconces. Had lashings and lashings of ice cream while waiting for the bus. Which was twenty minutes late, issue two refers. Bus Pass got off at Portsoy for some groceries as we had a Co-op token, and wouldn’t have to wait a full hour for the next bus. Issue three refers. That bus was fifteen minutes late. See issue two.

Very envious of your bus pass! And your buses too. They're far and few between where I live, and more often than not, cancelled.

Enjoyed the ride, puplehaze. And I sympathize. I now have earpods and Audibile to help keep me sane from the rude abusers of public transportation..
