Chapter 3
Children of the Moon
Wayferra was safe but somber. Sunlight still streaked through its lush green canopy. Brook sprites still dotted it cool gray shadows with tufts of golden light. All its’ strange and wonderful inhabitants still went about their daily task bearing their daily burdens but none bearing smiles. Sad eyes followed Kia as she fluttered down to the wooden bridge that led to her house but no one spoke. None could offer hope only open arms and broken hearts. They were grieving too.
Kian had been lost to the sky for many months now. He had stretched his body too far, changed it somehow. He had made it do what he needed it to do but they feared at too great a cost. If he were able to undo and return, they felt certain he would have by now. Moreover, they could no longer see his protective dome. It was gone. He was gone. They would never forget him or his wife. His widow would never want. They would see to that…
Kian had followed Kia back to their house and could now easily hear every comforting word Kress whispered into Kia’s ear. Though he could not make his words heard, he could at least hear and see how much the people of Wayferra loved her. Carrying that assurance with him, he drifted up through the rafters of the home he could no longer truly share with Kia and glided up above the treetops, spurned on by a sudden sense that something else was wrong...
Something was happening to his frozen body. He was not sure how but he could tell that it was in great distress. He had already pushed it far beyond what its’ designers had intended. Now it was trying to do something new, something else it designers had never intended, leave Chimera’ protective atmosphere cross the great gulf between Earth and the moon and go home.
Drifting higher and higher until the blue turned black and the stars came out, Kian finally reached his body but it was too late. The vacuum of space was simply too much for the winged oddity he once lived in. Helpless, he watched it swell like an over inflated balloon and explode mere inches from his face.
A ball of light instantly surrounded Kian, leaving him blind and somewhere he never intended to go…
