Evolutionary Myths

They used to say,
Some things are relics
in our bodies from previous
non-human ancestors –
vestigal, useless now,
like the vermiform appendix,
but scientists gradually realised the
highly specialised role
of its lymphatic nodules
and its rich blood supply
probably particularly in early childhood
controlling, in its placement
where the small intestine meets the colon,
bacteria from getting up into the intestines.
It also may help teach the growing body to recognise
which substances are foreign and need to be attacked.
So not a useless relic, or a sign of devolution
from a creature that used it more.
Reminiscent of Haekel’s embryological drawings
we were shown for years to imply evolution
– later shown to be forged.
Similarities in design don't mean
one developed into another,
and differences are to big to happen
by small chance mutational damaging changes.

The human body is certainly a remarkable creation Rhiannon.
I don't really understand about evolution as I'm no expert, but you put this poem together well for the inspiration point.
Jenny.
