Dirk Richard's Mistake
Hello, my name is Dirk Richards. It was a foggy night on a dirt road
when I made the biggest mistake of my life. But before we get into
that, let's talk about my life before this mistake happened. I was 31,
tall, and good-looking in a geek kind of way. I had a wife and two
kids. My wife's name was Marie and our two kids were Lee and Rick. Lee
was ten and Rick was six. My wife worked as a secretary in a doctor's
office while I was a salesman at one of the top selling companies. Lee
and Rick went to a highly respected school, the Williams School in
Denmark. We had very good lives and were in them. I came home every day
to a beautiful wife and two adorable kids. I always sat down to a good
meal and always played some sort of game with my kids before bed.
I was a very happy man. I made good sales and actually was one of the
best salesmen in the business. My boss was a real ass though. He had
just been hired from one of the biggest companies in the county, and
always tried to put me down in any possible way. If I didn't come in
with a tie I was totally screwed. Everyone in the business including
the secretaries agreed that I should have been the manager, but instead
"they" had hired this prick. Probably also cause I had the people's
vote that they didn't want to show that the people had that much power
over them. When I told my wife, she said that I would make so many
sales that next year they would be smart enough and make me
manager.
Let's get off the subject of my good-for-nothing boss. The key thing
to being a salesman is that you have to know whom you're selling. Some
people just like to talk and put the salespeople down. You get a lot of
those assholes many times, let me tell you. But anyway I knew the
people I was selling. Denmark was a small town and I was a friend to
just about every person there. Either that or they had heard that I was
a good man. So my life was just about perfect...until my big
mistake.
My family and I lived on a ranch, so of course there were crops. There
was a giant male cow with horns that would strike at you whenever he
could. Most of the time he was kept locked and we would stay away from
him. He belonged to my neighbors. I was coming home from a very hard
day at work and looking forward to seeing my wife and kids. It was only
6 p.m., but it was winter and dark as can be. I had seen that stupid
cow and saw that he had gotten out. So I got out of my car and stepped
out into in the darkness. It was pitch black; I could only see the
outline of shapes. As soon as I opened the gate that surrounded my
neighbor's "yard," the dark seemed to get darker. It enfolded me. I was
really stiff. I took one more step before I heard the sound of rushing
hooves. I wanted to run, but my legs couldn't seem to move. Then I felt
the cow's horn's gorge into my side. I staggered and fell. Then I felt
the cow's weight on me, and it actually threw parts of me in all
directions. Finally it just stopped and walked away. I was no longer
intact and I felt that my body tissue was all over the freshly washed
grass. My last thoughts were of my wife and kids and their beautiful
faces. Then I saw total and utter pitch-blackness.
