Gay Dad is a British comedy produced by Alomo Productions for Channel 4. It ran from 4 April 2001 to 9 May 2001 on Channel 4 and was written by Angus Lehart. 

Terry Manders (Aidan Turner) has been raised by his single parent father Micky Manders (Alan Cumming) since the age of five. On his sixteenth birthday Terry discovers that his dad  is gay, when he walks in on his father and builder Bob ‘going at it like untamed beasts’.   

Overview 

Terry Manders (Aidan Turner) has been raised by his single parent father Micky Manders (Alan Cumming) since the age of five. On his sixteenth birthday Terry discovers that his dad  is gay, when he walks in on his father and builder Bob ‘going at it like untamed beasts’.   

Terry soon realises that the signs have been there all along, and that Micky’s friends are all as ‘camp as a troop of boyscouts’, especially his best friend Lee (John Barrowman).  

Terry’s attempts at dating are thrown into turmoil by his dad’s friends and lifestyle. 

Reception 

The series gained a cult following amongst the LGBTQ community, but was commercially unsuccessful and was cancelled after the first series.  The Guardian described it ‘a dated 1980s sitcom about coming out made twenty years too late’.

Episodes 

Episode 1 – Some Things You Can Never Unsee. The discovery that his father is gay makes Terry see Micky’s friends in a new light.  

Episode 2 – Date Night. Terry has a date with Cherry, the hottest girl in class. However, he makes the mistake of taking her on a date in the same restaurant as his father and his new boyfriend. 

Episode 3 – More Than One School of Thought. A visit to Terry’s school for parents’ evening leads to revelations about Mr Collins one of Terry’s teachers, played by Alan Carr.  

Episode 4 –  Pure Poetry. Terry wins the school poetry competition and is put for publication in Rhyme Up Your Street Magazine. However, when the magazine’s editor calls round for a meeting it transpires that he knows Micky very well indeed.  

Episode 5 – Swinging Lessons.  Dance classes seem to be the perfect way for Terry to meet a girlfriend and he is delighted when fellow pupil Nancy invites him to her birthday party. Things become complicated however, when it transpires that his dad ‘knows’ Nancy’s father, her uncle Dick and the dance instructor Mabel (Alison McGintly).  A swinging time is had by all.  

Episode 6 – You shall go to the ball.  Terry is embarrassed at school because he doesn’t have a date for the end of term disco. Micky decides to help out by arranging a date with the daughter of a friend, Rose Nightly (Pippa Jones). However, and incident in the bathroom reveals that there is more to Rose than meets the eye, about eight inches more.
