Study in Blue

Cradled in the palm
of my hand – you,
a touch out of focus
by the side of a river,
somewhere in Vietnam,
I think you said.
You were smiling.
That ‘hippy hat’ of yours –
the blue one
with flowers on,
dipped over your eyes.
It was raining –
your kind of weather...
how you’d always
go for a turn
around the garden
when it did.
So many photos
of you I took...
over the years – yet
this – my favourite
the only one not
gone astray.
You’re half turning;
camera-shy –
as ever as always,
and this is how
I’ll remember you;
the line
of your lips – the tilt
of your chin.
A study in blue...blinking,
a little...no, excuse me –
a lot afraid.

I saw. Freaky ok :-) But nice, too. Looking forward to getting those swallows back. The leaves don't seem to have got the message yet, but they seem to linger well into November these days. A lovely poem, this, Tina. Better go and respond to yours! x

Deep beyond the smiles on old
Deep beyond the smiles on old photos of loved ones, there's so much more that we see. You capture the inexplicable nature of that seemingly effortlessly. The last line - that self correction - is charming and sweetens the end, even though fear is no laughing matter.
