Palm oil or Orangutans?

Palm oil or orangutans?
Which do I love more?
Orangutans are groovy, man.
Palm Oil is just a bore.
 
Palm oil is just a slimy thing,
like grimy grease or fat.
Orangutans are kings of swing;
rainforest acrobats.
 
All covered in bright orange hair,
they give my heart a glow,
but Palm Oil, well, so what? Who cares
if Palm Oil was to go?
 
And other oils they easily can,
in place of palm oil, use
but rare things are Orangutans,
so they're the thing I choose.
 
But if on Palm oil you insist;
use sustainable stuff.
Orangutan's cannot exist
if there aren't trees enough.
 
And climate change gets worse, just think,
without rainforest trees
so soon the apes who go extinct
just might be you and me.

I was so hoping you'd write about the environment! As usual you come at it from an unexpected angle so it's not the same old argument. Full of wit and warmth. Wish I could write like this! It is a treat to read

I always feel kind of guilty everytime I write about an issue because I feel like theres an element of exploitation, like I'm using the issue to make a nice poem that I hope people will like but it really does come from a feeling of the utter tragedy of the extinction of these precious, wonderful animals and the terror of knowing that the catastrophic consequences of global warming are very real and very close and yet there are still these powerful, money maddened people who are continuing to push the world over the edge and all of us with it.

NEVER  feel guilty! If I could only write like this I would, every day. No other issue is as important, for if we destroy the Earth there will be nothing anyway.

Lions, giaffes, elephants. These are all at serious risk. No cgi is ever going to be as wonderful as the reality of real creatures, shaped by life which unites us all

You are  NOT  exploiting an issue. If even one person realises their choices matter it helps.

Cute, funny, topical.  Great poem.  Casting my vote for the Orang-utans too.  And rainforests.  And continued life on Earth and so forth....

I'm amazed at the lack of response to this important topic.

What seems to be forgotten is the fact that palm oil is not just hazardous for Orangs (the greatest gift we have from Asia) but it's danderous for us also.

A cheap form of oil that is high in unsaturated fats if it is Kernal oils and the fruit oils is not that much better, especially when it is hydrogenated. The risk of LDL cholesterool is higher with Palm oil bec we often don't know which type it is and it is used a lot in CHEAP processed food and desserts.

Therefore apart from killing off wildlife (not just Orans: rare cat species and other mammals and reptiles) it's could be killing us. Don't knowingly buy anything with palm oil in it.

Well done ..... Where are the cherries EDs???

The trouble is that there is not an alternative in some products. I remember peanut butter being made with sunflower oil. Now in my (SMALL) supermarket there are several different brands but all with palm oil. I don't understand why hemp oil is not used more as it's so healthy and easy to grow here.
