Music To My Ear

We were three Italians
and set in our ways,
brought up with music
since our early days.
We'd wake up to the aria
of Nessun Dorma,
suffered with Tosca
or Bellini's Norma.
Then it all changed
because of a whim
of a redhead maverick
by the name of Joachim.
His real name, Gioachino,
wasn't liked by my friend
whose love for opera
had come to an end.
Of soul music and jazz
he was now a buff.
Of that type of music
he couldn't get enough.
He had LPs of Coltrane,
the American saxophonist,
and of Tommy Dorsey,
who was a trombonist.
Being enthusiastic
he'd often come round
to show me new records
he had recently found.
One day he forgot
to retrieve from my deck
the latest recording
by Bix Beiderbecke.
It was Singing the Blues
and I caught the drift
he hadn't forgotten
but that it was a gift.
To return it to him
could have been a risk:
I may have lost forever
my favourite disk.

Hi again Luigi,
Hi again Luigi,
just had to come back to your comment. I bet that collection of Jazz would be worth quite a bit, as vinyl is back in fashion.
I only started getting into Jazz in my late fifties, then I went out and bought a Jazz box set of CDs. There's some good stuff, like Chet Baker - Shorty Rogers - Ted Curson- Brooker Little, all Trumpeters. There's also Jazz from the Saxophone, Jazz piano, Jazz guitar. I love to play while I'm writing, it's very inspiring and takes the imagination on a magic carpet ride of sound.
Anyway take care and happy Jazz listening.
