ARTWORKS: © Jessica McCallum This mixed media pair formed part of the very first JM Exhibition held at His Majesty's Theatre, Perth, Western Australia in 2009. @jessicamccallumartist happens to be my daughter. As in future exhibitions, I was invited to write to each piece of art. (Ekphrastic poetry.)
KEEP
It takes all my strength to pull this life to me,
To claw and tear my way from one day to another.
Not counting, just tearing one more here in the glow
of the sun suffocated by rays of light and warmth,
holding tight to ties that bind. I want to KEEP
these precious feelings and bask in your love forever.
KEPT
Here I am, waiting for your touch
pulling down the sun - shouting
screaming to be heard above
white noise, direct lines dedicated
servers on your world wide web
Feel the electric zings tingling
Finger tips to toes I turn my cheek
Expecting the slap as you run away…

This hit me hard—raw,
This hit me hard—raw, electric, and deeply human.
The desperate need to keep what matters, the ache of waiting in kept—you’ve captured that tension between hope and hurt so powerfully. “Pulling down the sun” and “electric zings” linger like bruises under the skin. Thank you for this.
