[Continuing the hymn-for-Sundays series]

A book of a father’s instructions,
desiring his child’s good health,
his Maker’s protection, provision,
prosperity and real wealth.

He knew of his own follies, failures,
and wanted to spare his child
from pitfalls and traps, deceivers,
disasters in going wild.

So much common-sense, and word-pictures –
memorable to stick in the mind,
gain wisdom, see purpose in strictures,
work well, trustworthy and kind.

Proverbs is a kind of "neutral book" a collection containing purely wisdom and without religion, so that a person of any religious convictions or not, can read it benefit from it and apply it in everyday life.

As God created all, all wisdom and "common sense" comes from him. There are some proverbs like some ot the Bible ones in secular literature.  The Bible book links it all to the 'fear of – deep reverence for – the Lord" and it is He that can help us apply, and also provide the mercy for forgiveness when it is needed, and a new start/heart.

But the 'ordinariness' ond humour of much of the advice and its perception of our foibles, can draw interest in reading by those who don't have any Christian convictions (yet!).

curiosity and attraction

I am very pleased with your reply Rhiannon, seeing the value in attraction and waking curiousity and interest in the Bible and church, as promotion? and not confronting a person immediately with a Go or Nogo Heaven or Hell scenario.

As you head for winter, we are enjoying the return of spring and spring flowers! We have just had a week away on the coastal path and the pink 'pom-pom' thrift carpets and little starry blue squill and so many more flowers are wonderful there in May! Rhiannon
