The Stand In

St Peter, having stood sentry at heaven's entrance

for two millennia, took a break

(gone fishing in the Celestial Lakes).

In his stead, a cat stands in,

looking askance at any who dare crave

admittance.

Some straight away, under his judgemental gaze

leave and go away to the Other Place.

Others shakily enter, either with scratches

or the searing marks of his feline scorn

forever seared into their eternal souls.
