The End is Nigh
By Jane Hyphen

Everything’s falling apart
Said the strangest man
Of all, he is alone
An island in the midst of
Seas of change, new waves
Ever crashing upon the
Crumbling walls of his long
Extinguished parents’ home
The end is nigh
He said almost exulted
Having never quite begun
This closed-circuit man
Mother’s stale coat
On a hook in the hall
Never go inside, I won’t
Inner doors have bolts
The world is done for
Maybe he’s right and prophets
Keep their kingdoms tight
That’s how they know
For sure. The pirates bring
Him papers, every word
He reads, cover to cover
A sage of world affairs
The end is nigh
Like so many ends before
He says but how his garden
Grows eternal circles
Atoms holding hands
Hack it down, he says
The flowers speak a language
He will never understand
It’s all falling apart
That is his world
Straining, borders closed
Mother’s cactus shrivelled
Dusty on a shelf
Paper words of hate were
Only shadows on his wall
And in the stagnant kitchen
A stomach ache awaits
