Early Birds and Late Arrivals

I went to Rutland Waters

to see the ospreys’ nest

but it was the wrong time:

the birds had flown south-west

on the first day of fall

towards Western Sahara,

Mauritania and Senegal.

They’ll winter in the warmth

and their return in the spring

everyone will be cheering;

then we will hear them

melodiously singing.

With eight breeding pairs

the season was amazing;

the Manton Bay’s team

deserve lots of praising.

When spring returns

I must not be too late;

on next year’s calendar

I’ll book an early date.

Nice to see the osprey's nest, even better to see them! Good topic for the IP. ( 'when we will hear them to chirp and to sing' seemed a bit awkward?) Rhiannon

Hi Rhiannon, you are right: that line was a bit of a mouthful. I have changed it and hope it reads better now but I am still trying to think of a better rhyme.

Great poem for the I P Luigi. I've never been to Rutland Waters, so you've opened my eyes to a place to visit. What a miracle it is for these birds to fly so far and then return next year, it always amazes me how each generation knows exactly where to fly.

Hello Jenny,
Rutland Water is Anglian Water's drinking water reservoir but not just used for water storage. It is a popular sports centre as well for water sports such as sailing. Visitors enjoy fishing, walking and cycling along a 25 miles (40 km) perimeter track.
The main attraction though is the nature reserve which include lapwing, coot, goldeneye, tufted duck, pochard, teal, wigeon, cormorant, great crested grebe, little grebe and, most notably, osprey.
I have been there several times as I have friends who live in the area. Worth a visit in my opinion.
