A Puzzling Story

I recently read a story
without a beginning,
an end, or the middle.

I surmised that the plot
was probably a puzzle,
an enigma, or a riddle.

It was difficult to solve;
the author was too clever
and I was a second fiddle.

Or maybe he was a cheat
trying to find nincompoops
that he could easily diddle.

I couldn't find the solution,
so I cooked myself a burger
on a charcoal-fired griddle.
