The Weigh Bridge Market Men

By Paul McCann

The weigh bridge market men were a rare breed indeed .
A penny in their hand was the price of a feed .
For whatever it was worth it was cheap as hell .
Hot mutton pies and Chelsea buns were free to smell .

Castle lane Tucker sold potatoes from a sack .
Fagan sold bacon that he’d scraped off the pigs back.
Balinderry onions were a penny a pound .
Also a penny for your thoughts running around .

Cows were driven in by farmers on cobblestones .
Slaughtered on the spot for stew or slicked up soup bones .
Your man with the hand pulled cart sold some greens and fruit,
If he wasn’t busy he’d mend your hob nail boot .

Sammy would pour you pints of buttermilk from cans .
Jimmy the gypsy would tinker with pots and pans.
Alex could cure colic with an old remedy .
Market men like this make up Belfast’s history
